What is the NHPS philosophy on student-athletes' participation in sports at the high and middle school levels?
Any student is permitted to join a sports team at their comprehensive high school (with certain restrictions and or exceptions that apply). A student MUST be academically eligible by both NHPS and CIAC standards. It may be necessary for some sports teams to hold tryouts. However, all student-athletes who try out may not be accepted to the team. There is also no guarantee of playing time for student-athletes who are accepted to a specific team. All NHPS Coaches do their best to give all members of a team an opportunity to play, however, participation varies per sports team and is at the discretion of the coach(es).
Can a student-athlete play on more than one sports team at a time?
Student-athletes are permitted to play on more than one sports team, providing that the sports are not during the same season. Student-athletes must be academically eligible during all seasons (of participation).
Can a student-athlete play on a sports team and still be involved in another extracurricular activity?
Student-athletes can participate in an extracurricular activity and still play on a sports team (e.g. marching band and football) with the permission of both the coach and activity coordinator and provided that practices and activity and games schedules do not overlap. All NHPS Coaches will do their best to accommodate each student-athletes' needs.
What is the fee to participate on a sports team?
While there is no cost to participate, please factor in the cost for equipment and needs of your student-athlete.
What is expected of a student-athlete if he/she joins a sports team?
Each student-athlete who joins a sports team is expected to demonstrate positive and appropriate behaviors at all times in addition to their own academic responsibility to ensure eligibility. Each student-athlete is also expected to demonstrate a level of commitment to each sports by attending all practices as scheduled (by their coach). If a student-athlete is absent without a legal excuse and prior notification the day before a game, he or she will not be permitted to play in the game.

What is the NCAA Eligibility Center?
The NCAA Eligibility Center certifies whether prospective college athletes are eligible to play sports at NCAA Division I or II institutions. It does this by reviewing the student-athlete's academic record, SAT or ACT scores, and amateur status to ensure conformity with NCAA rules.
What are NCAA Divisions I, II and III?
The NCAA Is the governing body of many intercollegiate sports. Each college regulated by the NCAA has established rules on eligibility, recruiting and financial aid and falls into one of the three membership divisions. (Divisions I, II, and III). Divisions are based on college size and the scope of their athletic programs and scholarships.
When should students register?
The NCAA recommends that student-athletes register at the beginning of their junior year in high school but many register after their junior year. There is no registration deadline, but students must be cleared by the Eligibility Center before the receive athletic scholarships or compete at a Division I or II institution.
How do students register?
Students must register online at the NCAA Eligibility Center (Eligibilitycenter.org) They will have to enter personal information and answer questions about their course work and sports participation in and outside of high school, as well as pay a registration fee.
Can students have the registration fee waived?
Students who have received a waiver for the SAT or ACT are eligible for a waiver of the registration fee. The identified NCAA School Counselor must submit confirmation of the student's test fee waiver in the portal.
What records does the Eligibility Center require?
Students should arrange to have their high school transcript sent by the identified NCAA School Counselor assigned to their school as soon as they have completed at least six semesters of high school (end of junior year). The transcript must be directly uploaded by the high school portal. They must also arrange to have their SAT or ACT test scores reported directly by the testing company to the Eligibility Center. Students can arrange this when they register for the tests. Upon graduation, you must ensure that your final transcript is also uploaded to the portal as well.
What are the NCAA academic eligibility requirements?
To play a sport at a Division I or II institution, the student must:
~ Complete a certain number of high school core courses
~ Earn a certain minimum grade point average in these core courses
~ Earn a certain minimum score on the SAT or ACT
~ Graduate from high school
What are NCAA amateurism eligibility requirements?
To play sports at an NCAA Division I or II institution, the student-athlete must follow the NCAA amateurism rules about receiving a salary or prize money for athletic participation, playing with a professional team and other areas. The best way for students to prepare for a future in college athletics is to complete the approved core courses and earn appropriate grades in then. Indeed, more students fail to qualify to play NCAA sports because of lack of appropriate course work than for low test scores. Make sure that you are enrolled in the courses on your high school's core-course list, and also know the eligibility requirements of the NCAA Eligibility Center.
